Unuomamao
What is Unuomamao?
The term Unu in Unuomamao derives from Unukupukupu — “Shrine of Ferns [Rooted in Fresh Lava]” — a hula tradition grounded in ʻAihaʻa Pele, the ritual dance of volcanic phenomena. Rooted in the teachings of Hālau O Kekuhi and carried forward by Dr. Taupōuri Tangarō, Unukupukupu honors the sacred relationship between people and Hawaiʻi’s living landscapes through hula, chant (oli), regalia (ʻaʻahu), and ceremony (ʻaha).
Carrying this lineage forward, Unuomamao is Pālama Foundation’s community-centered hula learning experience. It focuses on hula and oli and is offered openly to the lehulehu, the wider community. With a foundation in accessibility and inclusion, Unuomamao welcomes everyone, regardless of prior hula experience. Whether you’re a seasoned hula dancer or just beginning, you are invited to join and engage in this living tradition.
What’s the Commitment?
Unuomamao is not a hālau. It’s designed to supplement, not replace, your hālau’s teachings, offering a space for shared learning, enrichment, and community engagement. It also provides a gentle entry point for those who want to explore hula and oli without the deeper commitment required by traditional hālau.
We aim to gather quarterly for weekend-long meetups that include:
Protocol and ceremony
Songs (mele)
Chants (oli)
Dances (hula)
Cultural discussions
We also offer shorter workshops (usually a few hours) where there is interest or need. These sessions focus on specific mele and are designed to bring Unuomamao's offerings to more people.
